PYP SCIENCE FAIR Feb. 3, 2017

3. NAACP HEARING ON CHARTER SCHOOLS IN Los Angeles City Hall. 2/9/2017 2-6pm; NAACP is holding a hearing on charter schools in Los Angeles. We are evaluating our participation because information on the event is limited and not readily available. In the last forum in Memphis it was reported that: "The NAACP is open to learning about the nuances of charter schools across the nation. When the NAACP board passed its resolution resolution calling for a pause in charter growth, many charter leaders feared the civil rights organization would generalize charter schools at the expense of those that are working well. But participants walked away from Tuesday’s hearing saying they felt better as task force members softened their language while learning about the education landscape in Memphis and about Tennessee’s charter law. The state only allows nonprofit operators that are authorized by local school districts or the state."

SOARING EAGLES UPDATE:

From MS. Ley: Sending an invitation to cheer on the Soaring Eagles as they take on the FireCracker Run this Sunday in Chinatown in celebration of Chinese New Year. Race begins at 8:30am and it should take them between 45mins-1hour and a half to complete.

Also we would really appreciate any sort of support for the 5 Soaring Eagles who are doing the LA Marathon. The students are: Andrea Olmos, Christine Estudillo, Diego Perez, Jasson Murgo and Brian Reyes. They have been training hard, and running their long runs on the weekend at 6:45am at the Rose Bowl.

We have to raise $2075 for all 5. This includes the costs of:
1) $210 Race entry fee
2) $140 for Shoes (I already have two pairs of shoes sponsored, I sponsored a student, so we need 2 more)
3) $40 compression running socks
4) $25 for running/water belt

STANDING ROCK UPDATE:

Submit a public comment on the Dakota Access Pipeline

Army Corps of Engineers has prepared an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) route. The fast tracking of DAPL under Nationwide Permit 12 failed to allow for environmental review and critical input from the Standing Rock Sioux tribe, local landowners, and the public. This EIS is an important step in the right direction. Your comments may positively impact this historic issue.

ALSO Thank you to the three parents (Alma, Gaby, Araceli) and two students (Axayacatzi and Kimberly) who attended along with Minnie and myself at this past weekend's march and rally to support Standing Rock. Tata Edward, Nana Gatica, Mr. Farias and Manuel Lopez also attended.

Here is an amazing view of the crowd.
